After decades of stagnating wages, mounting debt, and rising costs of living, the common people grew desperate for the “freedom to earn.” Across the nation and “right to sign” laws made it possible to write contracts for almost anything. At the same time, a small but privileged class of elites gathered more wealth and power than prior generations could have dreamed of.

In this environment of extreme economic liberty and inequality, the first “Nexum” contract was written. Considered a “long-term physical contact and indenture” contract, nexum agreements allowed the rich and powerful almost complete ownership of anyone who volunteered to sign.

Soon, most powerful men had a “Nexum-girl” on their arms as a status symbol. Demand and value for Nexum volunteers went through the roof.

Rather than pay the inflated prices, the GHS corporation and other private interests lobbied for reform to the existing “private prison” system. They proposed that convicts be entrusted to (sold) individual stewards (owners) rather than institutions under an “involuntary Nexum” program.

The Mandatory Nexum bill gained little traction until a tragic disaster led to a populist outcry demanding reform.

It is in the wake of this disaster that Diana’s story begins.
